1stWorks introduces hotComm, its massively scalable desktop client for secure peer to peer messaging, file transfer and collaboration over the Internet for unlimited numbers of simultaneous users.

Innovative Internet connectivity company introduces technology showcase product and availability of its foundation technology.

Sudbury MA, June 18, 2001 - 1stWorks Corporation today announced general availability of its desktop collaboration client, hotComm. Based on highly innovative peer to peer network management technology, hotComm combines the power and performance of serverless peer to peer messaging with the privacy and security of direct connections between users. Designed with personal and corporate applications in mind, hotComm supports all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95.

hotComm is the desktop client in 1stWorks' peer to peer network, the 1stWorks Peer Network. This network manages direct peer to peer connections through the Virtual Network Server (VNS), a unique development of 1stWorks that delivers similar functionality to the Web's Dynamic Name Server (DNS). Whenever a user launches an Internet session, hotComm automatically updates the name entry in the VNS with the user's current IP address or port. The clean, intuitive graphics show a registered user which of his contacts are currently online and connects with any or all of them simply by selecting their names from the Peer List. Sessions, with up to 255 contacts, are linked directly, securely and interactively, from person to person, desktop to desktop, however and wherever the Web connection is created.

The VNS is part of 1stWorks foundation technology specifically designed to monitor and manage the dynamically allocated IP address (or port numbers for NAT protected users) issued by an Access Provider when a user connects to the Internet. The VNS enables secure connections by relating the dynamic IP address, which changes every time the user connects to the Internet, to the user's email address, which is relatively constant. Only management of the current location of registered users requires a central server. The hotComm client handles everything else, even contact availability status.

Since hotComm has no central server managing data flow, there is no single point of failure or gateway for unauthorized access. Security is further insured through the use of a streaming cipher of all session data encrypted with a unique key based on a specific combination of the particular session and the individual participants. Breaking a session connection and then reconnecting with the same users generates a new session and a different encryption key. This dynamic key insures privacy and confidentiality for all connectivity and collaboration.

hotComm supports multiple communication modes for group access: Text Messaging transmits every single word separately so that the message builds dynamically in front of the recipient. And the abbreviation/expansion feature reduces your typing effort by coding frequently used phrases and expressions. Clicking on the microphone icon seamlessly switches to Voice and provides a direct audio contact with colleagues. hotComm also includes hotWeb, a valuable Web tour feature where any user can display Web pages simultaneously to all other session members and follow any embedded links. "Drag and drop" File Transfer allows a user to provide access to individual data files on his computer system to other individuals, to groups of users or to anyone on the World Wide Web. And when the session host selects the Web page icon and enters a URL or selects one from a favorites list, it is automatically presented on the screens of the other session members for collaborative discussion and modification. As with other hotComm communications, every file transfer is protected through encryption with a unique, dynamic key specific to the particular users in each individual session.

A free 60 day trial copy of hotComm is available now at www.hotcomm.com/downloads.asp. Introductory pricing for hotComm, supporting secure collaboration with word by word text messaging including abbreviation/expansion, Web tours, file transfer and remote file access and ezPeer, is $19.95 for a 3 month license, $64.95 for a full year. Quantity discounts are available.

For software developers who want to "peer to peer" enable their existing Windows applications quickly, 1stWorks provides a P2P Developers Tool Kit with the VNS, the client DLL and patented API driven address management technology. Contact us for licensing details.
