BOSTON, MA, February 28, 2006 – 1stWorks, a real-time interactive software communications company with solutions for secure collaboration, conferencing, and multimedia content delivery, has announced that a paper describing its patent-pending data compression technology has been accepted for discussion at the prestigious annual Data Compression Conference to be held in late March in Snowbird, Utah. 1stWorks Corporation and Microsoft Research are the only two submissions accepted by the Conference Committee from commercial companies for the conference, the rest originating in the academic arena. The 1stWorks Encoder encapsulates data compression technology based on the new Quantized Indexing algorithm developed by its Chief Scientist, Ratko Tomic. This new algorithm solves the four decades old problem of arithmetic precision in Enumerative Coding which has limited its use in general purpose compression despite its theoretical optimality, to the specialized field of encoding CDs and DVDs. "Simply put, the 1stWorks Encoder always compresses data to a smaller size than the very best research-level Entropy Coders, while simultaneously delivering a significant speed and power consumption advantage," said 1stWorks President Nigel Spicer. "We believe that this new algorithm genuinely represents an inflection point in general purpose data compression performance. Ten years from now, we expect applications incorporating the 1stWorks Encoder to be everywhere, from cell phones to set top boxes." 1stWorks is currently developing its own video codec based on the algorithm which will be incorporated into its hotComm suite of collaboration and conferencing solutions and will deliver significant improvements in the effective video frame rate. The Quantized Indexing Research Kit, including source code for a sample implementation of the new algorithm, is available from 1stWorks, together with detailed Technical Reports, at www.1stworks.com/ref/qi.htm. The sample code can be used by knowledgeable developers to independently review its method of operation and to confirm the speed and compression efficiency made possible using the algorithm. The Data Compression Conference, at which this new algorithm will be presented, is sponsored by Brandeis University, with the proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. It will be held from March 28-30 in Snowbird, Utah, with 1stWorks presenting at the Poster Session on March 29.
